Scholarly Communication and Copyright Librarian

Summary

The Scholarly Communication and Copyright Librarian develops, coordinates and promotes the growth of the Library’s scholarly communications programs and services, including outreach, training and support to faculty, students, and staff on copyright, fair use, open access, open education and scholarly publishing; and provide specialized research consultations and instruction services in these areas.

The Scholarly Communication and Copyright Librarian supports digital scholarship by promoting the use of DigitalGeorgetown, the Library’s institutional repository, as well as other scholarly communication tools provided by the Library. They advance the Library's scholarly communication initiatives by developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships within the Library and with faculty, staff and students, in order to facilitate a seamless, interdisciplinary, and university-wide network supporting faculty and students in research publication and impact.

Reporting to the Head of Research Services, along with ten other subject liaisons and reference librarians, the Scholarly Communication and Copyright Librarian works closely with other department colleagues, including Access Services, the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, and the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services Department. They also engage with faculty, students, and partners across campus, developing strong relationships and supporting the Library's as well as the university's scholarly communication endeavors.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Library and Information Science and/or a related advanced degree in legal studies or information science or a Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA-accredited institution
  • Significant experience with and knowledge of copyright law and policy, licensing, and other intellectual property issues - especially as they relate to fair use, new models of scholarly communication, Open Access, author's rights, and scholarly use of intellectual property
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience, including progressively responsible leadership experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly publishing trends and initiatives related to open access and OER - e.g., SPARC initiatives, Read and Publish, Subscribe to Open) across a variety of disciplines
  • Awareness of policies and practices related to research data, OER, Open Science and scholarly publishing in the academic research landscape
  • Ability to communicate effectively across a wide and diverse range of stakeholders and build collaborative relationships
  • Demonstrated experience creating instructional and outreach materials related to copyright, IP or other scholarly communication issues
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in using emerging technologies and software to create solutions that address the evolving information needs of university faculty and students
  • Strong service commitment to working with students, faculty, staff, and other communities
  • An active awareness of new technologies and the impact they have on the rapidly changing scholarly communication landscape
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population

  • Juris Doctorate with library and legal education and experience

Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian

Job Overview

 

The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian collaborates with Library and campus stakeholders to build digital collections and to maximize the access, discovery, usability, and preservation of the Library’s repository-based scholarship and digital cultural heritage materials. This position plays an important role in the development, coordination, and management of the Library’s digital repository services. The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian oversees the Library’s digital preservation repository and coordinates digital preservation workflows for digitized and born-digital content. This position supports the planning and implementation of scholarly digital projects and collaborates on digital scholarship initiatives. The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian helps promote digital repository services, digital publishing, and digital initiatives throughout the Library and the University.

 

Work Interactions

 

The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian reports to the Head of the Digital Scholarship Services Unit, and works within the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services department. This position supervises two FTE staff members as well as one to two student assistant(s). The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian liaises with staff across many of the Library’s units and departments to coordinate and complete projects. The Digital Repository and Preservation Librarian administers institutional repository and digital publishing services for Georgetown faculty, staff, and students through DigitalGeorgetown and helps support the full lifecycle of digital scholarship projects. This position represents the Digital Scholarship Services Unit and the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services department on task forces, committees, and working groups.

  • An ALA-accredited graduate degree in Library or Information Science, or a graduate degree in a related discipline plus equivalent knowledge and experience
  • At least two years of experience managing digital repository and/or publishing platforms (DSpace, Fedora, Samvera/Hyrax, Open Journal Systems, etc.)
  • Direct experience with Library-based digital initiatives and services
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, manage, and implement digital projects and initiatives
  • Knowledge of digitization standards, digital image file specifications, digital audio and video codecs, and preservation standards for digital objects in a variety of formats
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital preservation issues, strategies, standards, and best practices
  • Knowledge of metadata standards used in digital Library collections (Dublin Core, MODS, PREMIS, etc.)
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, customer service, and project management skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical issues and solutions to a diverse set of stakeholders and the ability to translate user needs into technical requirements

  • Experience with collections as data for text mining, network analysis, and other computational research methodologies
  • Familiarity with APIs for cultural heritage repositories, such as the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)

This position reports to the Director of Scholarly Technology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated experience with either R or using Python for data analysis.

The Librarian for the Okinawa Collection and Japan Resource Center is a part-time limited-term position with possibility of renewal that supports the development and use of Okinawa- and Japan-focused resources in close collaboration with faculty, students, and other stakeholders.

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Steward print and digital collections relating to the study of Okinawa and Japan, including identifying and acquiring resources in English, Japanese, and other languages relevant to the study of the region
  • Provide on-site and remote research services and participate in instruction activities
  • Collaborate with colleagues to coordinate processing of research materials to ensure discoverability
  • Conduct outreach and actively promote the Okinawa Collection and Japan Resource Center to faculty, students, researchers, and members of the Okinawan diaspora, among other stakeholders, and develop associated exhibits and events
  • Participate in professional organizations and keep current with library standards, trends, and technologies
  • Supervise a part-time assistant

This position reports to the Associate Dean and may be eligible for partial telework.

Access Services Specialist, Print Collection

Summary

This Access Services Specialist-Print Collections supports the teaching, learning, and research of the Georgetown University community by helping fulfill the University Library’s mission as an agile organization providing preeminent services, collections, and spaces. This position provides support in the Print Collections and at all Service Desk Units in the Access Services department by performing routine tasks and executing special projects. This work schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday, and on Saturdays this position will serve as the sole supervisor on duty.

This position is responsible for the implementation of an inventory procedure. This position is responsible for all activities associated with the faculty office delivery service- including processing requests, ensuring timely delivery of materials, communicating with faculty regarding failed deliveries and special requests, and sending delivery confirmation notices. This position coordinates the courier service of materials on the Main campus as well as between the Main, Medical, OCS, and Law campuses including coordinating the process of weeding and delivery of materials to off-campus storage.  Assists with the scheduling, training, and supervision of 30-50 student library assistants every semester. Work assignments and schedules will vary to address cyclical and priority needs of the department.

Access Services Qatar Specialist

Summary

The Access Services Qatar Support Specialist, based at the Georgetown University Library in Washington, DC, supports the teaching, learning, and research of faculty, students, and staff at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (SFS-Q) campus in Doha, Qatar. This position's work schedule is 8 am to Noon, Monday-Friday, in the Access Services Department of Georgetown University Library.

This position is responsible for fulfilling Qatar users' requests for books, media, book chapters and articles and expediting delivery of these items. Other duties include Circulation/Reserves Desk and Stacks Services support. This position works closely with SFS-Q Library staff and participates in supporting the operations of the Access Services Department of Georgetown University Library to the mutual benefit of both libraries. Works on special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required
  • 1 year library experience, preferably in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty, and staff

Resource Sharing Supervisor

Summary

The Resource Sharing Supervisor coordinates resource sharing services for the Georgetown University Library by ensuring that resource sharing requests are reviewed and accurately filled in a timely and efficient manner; and sets priorities and makes decisions on a variety of complex matters. Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the performance of Access Services Specialists and student employees
  • Complies with the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code and copyright law
  • Maintains proficiency in the standards, policies, fees, and services of the department, the Library, and the University and exercises good judgment in communicating them to the Library’s patrons
  • Provides basic research assistance to users

STEM Research and Instruction Librarian

Summary
  • Participates as a subject specialist and generalist in the provision of reference and research assistance to users, through  in-person + virtual  consultations, phone consultations , and email correspondence.
  • Participates as a collection development resource and library liaison for designated disciplines: engineering, nursing, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics..
  • Develops and updates subject-specific LibGuides and other instructional materials to improve access to and use of the library collections.
  • Provides individual and group library instruction, both in general and in subject-specific settings.
  • Monitor scholarly publishing trends and their impact on information and library services to STEM students and faculty
  • Works in tandem with colleagues in the Libraries and across campus to develop and expand new library initiatives, including the promotion of scholarly communications and open access.
  • Participates as a professional member in the University Libraries in shared collegial decision making and planning; participate in committees and ad hoc projects; contribute to the library profession and engage in professional development activities; participate in and contribute to professional organizations and publications.
Description

The STEM Research and Instruction Librarian will provide library instruction, research services, and collection development for designated subject areas. This position serves as the liaison librarian to the School of Engineering, the Conway School of Nursing, and to the departments of Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.  This position operates as part of a team of research and instruction librarians responsible for engaging students and faculty in using the collections and services available in the University Libraries. As appropriate, the librarian collaborates and partners with campus groups, such as the Center for Teaching Excellence and outside groups,  such as the Washington Research Library Consortium.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

 

ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent required; secondary degree in a STEM discipline and at least one (1) to two (2)  year of experience working in a college or university library, particularly those serving scientists or engineers.

Preferred Qualifications: Skill in using common computer software, library-specific applications, and social media (e.g., word processing software, bibliographic systems, databases, etc.).
