Library Systems Coordinator

Summary

The Library Systems Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a high level of engagement and development of technical expertise regarding the library systems and technology used by the University Library with particular focus on assisting with the maintenance and configuration of the Integrated Library System, and development of successful automation of workflows. Duties include optimizing workflows, monitoring and investigating enhancements, ensuring the continuity and connectivity of data between systems, promoting their full potential, and ensuring the quality and effectiveness of library software, applications, interfaces, and queries.

This position supports users of University Library systems across the entire organization from multiple departments to ensure that workflow needs are being met. The incumbent maintains a list of systems projects and requests, evaluating them for impact and ease of implementation. Additionally, the position leads quarterly testing of new Alma features and assists with or leads their implementation as appropriate.

Description

•    Assists with configuration of the University Library’s cloud-based library unified services platform. Leads or collaborates in the implementation, support, and maintenance, of applications, including but not limited to the library services platform and other systems as implemented or requested. Leads the cross-functional Alma Management Team, plans and directs testing and integration of monthly release functionality for Alma and Primo in both our production and sandbox environments. Monitors system functionality effectiveness and makes changes where needed. 
•    Using knowledge of low-code/no-code platforms(such as Microsoft Power Platform/Power Automate), basic scripting, and interoperability standards creates connections between library and other University systems such as Alma/Alma Analytics, Ares, ILLiad, the Springshare suite and Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams Leverage the potential of the systems used by the University Library, building bridges between them, maximizing automation, allowing workflows to be as seamless as possible Investigate best practices, add-ons, and application programming interfaces for cloud-based and local implementations of systems and provide support when necessary. 
•    Works collaboratively with all University Library public and technical services staff to ensure systems are optimized and interoperable with the goal of providing a positive and seamless user experience from both the public and staff perspectives.
•    Initiates and encourages engagement from all users of Alma to submit proposals for improved workflows and manages those requests; complete these projects in coordination with library goals. Conduct periodic training sessions on relevant technology systems so they are conversant with computing technologies, particularly best practices in the use of Alma, Office 365, ServiceNow, etc. 
•    Supervises part time graduate student and/or undergraduate employees in projects related to data entry, data cleanup, and system rearchitectures and other library systems support. Trains part-time employees in basic functions of systems as needed for work. Responsible for hiring, scheduling, onboarding, coaching, evaluation, and payroll.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

•    Bachelor's degree.
•    2-4 years of relevant experience.
•    Experience using the Alma library management system.
•    Experience facilitating application integrations; a working knowledge of system interoperability tools such as APIs.
•    Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies.
•    Ability to troubleshoot and resolve application-related technical problems.
•    Ability to recommend and support decisions on process and workflow changes.

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Master's degree or equivalent.
•    4-6 years of relevant experience.
•    Experience configuring the Alma Management system including the management and editing of code-tables and advanced settings.
•    Experience using low code and no code platforms such as Microsoft Power Automate, AirTable, or Google AppSheet.
•    Experience with Primo VE.
•    Experience working within Alma’s Network Zone architecture.
•    Experience in library consortia.
•    Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript).
•    An understanding of bibliographic and metadata tools (e.g., MARC records, BIBFRAME, Dublin Core, EAD, OpenURL, OAI-PMH, SWORD, link resolvers, knowledge bases.)
•    Experience with open-source software and applications.

Cataloging Librarian

The Jacob Burns Law Library at the George Washington University Law School is accepting applications for a cataloging librarian position to begin as early as October 15, 2023. As a member of the library’s collaborative Resource Management Services team, the individual in this position provides bibliographic metadata for resources in the library collection to facilitate their discovery in support of the study and research needs of the GW Law community. Resource Sharing Technician

Summary

The Resource Sharing Technician, Day is responsible for resource sharing including borrowing, lending and document delivery by Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Washington Research Library Consortium’s (WRLC) Consortium Loan Services (CLS). The technician also trains Resource Sharing part-time staff. The incumbent is also responsible for patron education and outreach pertaining to resource sharing and collection of statistical data on resource sharing activity. Supervises student workers in the absence of the day and evening circulation supervisors.

Description
  • Manages activities related to resource sharing: coordinates and processes lending, borrowing and document delivery using ILLiad and CLS; regularly reviews and implements policies and procedures for resource sharing; communicates with CLS coordinators in WRLC, interlibrary loan coordinators outside WRLC and members of the CUA community regarding resource sharing; serves on appropriate library, university and WRLC committees.
  • Assists with opening and closing of the stacks and the library as needed. Able to work flexible schedule. Some weekend hours included.
  • Trains and reviews the quality and quantity of work performed by part-time resource sharing staff. 
  • Assists with stacks management, circulation, reserves and other Access Services duties, as needed. 
  • Collects resource sharing statistical data and incorporates the data into monthly and annual reports.
  • Supervises student workers when day + evening circulation supervisors are not present.
  • Provides backup support for Circulation, Welcome desk, and other areas as needed.
Qualifications

One (1) year library or customer service experience with a Bachelor’s Degree OR One (1) to (2) years related library experience with an Associate’s degree. 

General knowledge of resource sharing systems. Knowledge of library functions and organization. Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system. Excellent online searching skills.

Head, Sciences and Technology Team and Mercer Library

Summary

We have a position open for Head, Sciences and Technology Team and Mercer Library at George Mason University. Mason Libraries is seeking a professional to lead a team of Science and Technology librarians and staff as Head of a growing campus library in Northern Virginia. The Science and Technology Campus is located approximately 30 miles west of Washington, DC in the Innovation Park research and development business park. 

Mercer Library serves Mason faculty, staff and students in numerous research centers and advanced degree programs in biomedical and biological sciences, biology, chemistry, and computational and data sciences. The Head collaborates with colleagues in the Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, and Teaching & Learning Teams within the Mason Libraries’ Learning, Research, and Engagement division. Head, Sciences and Technology Team and Mercer Library
The George Mason University Libraries seek to fill the position of Head, Sciences and Technology Team and Mercer Library. Part of the Learning, Research, and Engagement (LRE) unit, the Science and Technology Team supports the research and instruction needs of students, staff, and faculty in science and technology related programs and departments. More directly, Mercer Library, which is part of the SciTech Team, supports the George Mason University Science and Technology campus community.

About the position:

This position is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of innovative library services in the areas of reference, research, instruction, and in support of faculty and students within the fields of earth sciences, physical sciences, health sciences, life sciences, biomedical sciences, engineering, and computing, as well as the overall management of the Mercer Library at the Science & Technology campus. As a faculty librarian position, the SciTech Head is also responsible for engaging in professional development and scholarly endeavors as part of an ongoing reappointment process.

Responsibilities:

Team and Functional Leadership

  • Contributes to planning, policy development, resource management, and decision-making within LRE and, as a member of the Libraries’ leadership team, to the university library system as a whole; and
  • Directly supervises and evaluates five (5) subject librarians in their reference/research/instruction/outreach roles; supervises and evaluates three (3) additional library staff members who (a) support the Science & Technology Team and (b) contribute to the daily management of the Mercer Library.


STEM-H Strategy and Operations

  • Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Learning, Research & Engagement, plans, implements, manages, and evaluates reference/research consultations, outreach, and instructional services and programs designed for students and faculty in the broad range of STEM-H fields.


Outreach and Engagement Strategy and Mercer Library/SciTech Campus Strategy and Operations

  • Responsible for the operations of the Science & Technology Campus’s Mercer Library. Responsible for coordination of instruction, reference services, collections services, and outreach to programs supported on the Science & Technology Campus including, but not limited to, the Governor’s School at Innovation Park and the George Mason University Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program.
     
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program OR an equivalent certified foreign degree;
  • Progressively responsible management-level professional experience (typically 3+ years);
    Demonstrated capability in providing responsive and quality reference, instruction, and collaborative library research services to users in STEM-H in face-to-face and online settings;
  • Understanding of the changing educational and research needs of STEM-H program students, faculty, and researchers;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds; and Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The following education and/or skill sets are preferred:

Metadata and Cataloging Management Librarian

Summary

Metadata and Cataloging Management Librarian provides leadership, management, and technical expertise for receiving, metadata, cataloging, and their workflow management for library resources. The position leads the Metadata Management Unit, which is responsible for metadata creation and maintenance for library collections across multiple platforms, serials maintenance, and physical resources workflows. The incumbent monitors trends in cataloging, metadata, and other relevant vendor communities such as BIBFRAME and Linked Data, and cultivates a forward-thinking approach to cataloging and metadata practices. This position supervises at least four FTE who provide support in fulfilling the responsibilities of the unit.

Description
  1. Leads the library’s Metadata Management Unit. Provides leadership, management, and technical expertise to plan and oversee regular unit work and special projects. Hires, trains, and onboards unit staff and carries out ongoing performance evaluation, including ongoing professional development for staff. Contributes to strategic and annual planning goals for the unit, department, and library. Creates and maintains unit workflow documentation and statistics. Supervises at least four full-time staff positions.  
  2. Provides expertise for ensuring high quality metadata in library systems.  Oversees workflow management for physical materials and seeks ongoing system improvements to create efficiencies in managing physical resources. Creates and maintains import and integration profiles in the Library Services Platform. Collaborates with Access Services and other departments to plan for and carry out special projects as needed. Serves as a standing member of the library’s Alma and Primo administrative teams as the relevant cataloging subject expert. Serves as the American University representative to the WRLC Metadata Committee. 
  3. Collaborates with the Metadata Coordinator, Archivist for Special Collections and Digital Initiatives, and others as needed to plan for and carry out bibliographic description and metadata for archives, special collections, and digitized resources. Evaluates staff work to ensure metadata and cataloging performed meet agreed upon standards. Collaborates with Scholarly Communication Librarian, Metadata Coordinator, and others as needed to establish metadata input guidelines for metadata work in the institutional repository.
  4. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution. 
  • 4-6 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library. In-depth knowledge of best practices, issues, technologies, and trends in academic libraries in areas of cataloging, metadata, and workflow management. 
  • Minimum of three years’ experience supervising full-time personnel.  
  • Experience with library management systems and enterprise platforms such as Alma, Primo, OCLC Collection Manager, WorldCat and Connexion.
  • Demonstrated experience with original cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and authority control, in addition to standards including but not limited to MARC21, RDA, LCSH, LC Classification, MarcEdit.
  • Ability to develop policies and best practices in line with national and local standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, develop and manage workflows, and create and maintain documentation.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience with acquisitions receiving, knowledgebases, and serials management. 
  • Knowledge of emerging trends including BIBFRAME and Linked Data.
  • Knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards. 
  • Knowledge of PCC standards and practices. 
  • Experience with institutional repositories and digital archives.
