Media Services Coordinator

Summary

Assists with managing the day-to-day operations of the Media Services unit and the library collections circulating technology and physical media (DVDs) available for loan. The incumbent collaborates with the Media Services Manager to ensure successful operations of the unit. Assists with managing the library’s circulation of technology, AV equipment, and physical media. Responsible for processing and scheduling user access to the media and technology collections. The incumbent also develops technology-related resource guides and instructional programming for Media Services and Makerspace services related, but not limited to, Digital Scholarship. The incumbent is entrusted with project management responsibilities and the delegation of work. The incumbent responds directly to user inquiries through email, chat, ticketing, one on one consultations, and telephone. Helps coordinate the large format and poster printing service and public scanning services. Manages the Media Services student staff, including hiring, scheduling, training, coaching, evaluating, organizing, and delegating daily work. The incumbent is responsible for completing part time payroll and tracking part time budget expenditures.

Description
  1. Assists users with access to the library’s media and technology collections, including answering user inquiries and other direct-to-user services. Collaborates with faculty and University departments to identify and support their media and technology needs. Organizes and maintains scheduling of media and technology reservations. Resolves patron problems efficiently and effectively in accordance with Access Services policies and procedures. Is invested with on-the-spot, independent decision-making authority to determine the ability of a patron to access and/or borrow library materials. Communicates library policies and copyright guidelines to patrons. Promotes and highlights services and collections, including conducting technology related instructional sessions. Provides content for media and technology outreach through social media, web pages, video tutorials and library guides.
  2. Maintains and organizes the resources in the library’s circulating technology and media collections. Resources include the collection of laptops and other multimedia hardware, the public access scanners, AV equipment, and other departmental hardware. Arranges updates and maintenance of resources, including service calls, software updates, and website revisions. Troubleshoots user problems with the technology and repairs equipment. Makes technology purchasing and replacement decisions in collaboration with the Media Services Manager. Identifies new technology to meet evolving user needs. 
  3. Hires, trains, and supervises Media Services part time student staff. Submits biweekly payroll and monitors the Media Services part time budget.
  4. Participates in departmental planning and projects to improve library and Access Services processes. Coordinates systems needs for Media Services with other Access Services staff and manages scanner maintenance, bricking overdue/lost Chromebooks. 
  5. Perform unit responsibilities, including engaging in unit meetings, assisting with maintaining unit document, participating with shaping unit policies and procedures. Serve as essential services staff member in the event of a University closing due to inclement weather or emergency. Other duties as assigned within the division, library, or university.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Hiring, training, supervising, coaching a part time student staff of 3-5.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Customer service and management/supervisory experience.
  • Experience in accounting or handling financial/monetary transactions.
  • Strong Excel and/or other organizational/reporting software experience.
  • Experience generating and analyzing reports.
  • Experience working with a team to complete common objectives.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and multi-task, including the ability to reprioritize tasks to resolve urgent complex issues that arise.
  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills – both oral and written – are essential.
  • Ability to solve problems, work without supervision, make evaluative judgments independently, and formulate exceptions to policies and procedures.
  • Sound judgment with the ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality, work independently, and complete projects by deadlines.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • Some education or experience in library science and familiarity with library-specific systems such as Alma/Primo a unified cloud-based discovery platform.
  • Experience providing reference/research assistance.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience using Alma/Primo VE / Ares / Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience in library consortia.
  • Experience in multimedia production and filmmaking.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Experience with laptops and technological equipment highly desirable.
  • Prior filmmaking or audio recording experience is highly desired.
  • Prior experience troubleshooting technology or working with 3D printing is desired.
  • Experience working with a contemporary integrated library system preferred.

About the Department/Unit

Media Services is a small team which works closely together to build, maintain, and support the Library's collections of media materials and circulating technology equipment. On a daily basis, Media Services works with the other units within the Library's Discovery Access and Assessment division to provide services to users and support the academic programs of the University.

Access and Education Librarian, Department Head

Assistant Professor, Access and Education Librarian, Department Head

Library & Learning Services (L&LS) at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, invites applications for a faculty librarian position beginning July 2023.  Department Heads, in collaboration with the University Librarian (UL), provide leadership and supervision to a Department, its members, and its teams within L&LS.  The Department Head guides the operation, quality, and development of the services, programs, resources, and personnel within the Department. The Access & Education (A&E) Department Head ensures physical access to resources, provides support for research, and informs through instruction services that promote the integration of information literacy throughout the curriculum to the Marymount University community.  In collaboration with Team Coordinators, the A&E Department Head provides leadership and vision for services such as circulation, resource sharing, outreach, open and affordable educational resources, reference, and instruction services. 

Librarians at Marymount University participate in collection development, serve as subject liaisons to schools or programs, teach library instruction and information literacy classes, and provide reference and research assistance.  

An ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science and at least five years of relevant library work experience (with a minimum of two years of progressive supervisory responsibility) are required. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of work with diverse populations, in support of the library and university's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.  The position holds a renewable 12-month contract, as a non-tenure-track faculty with rank, and may have flexibility for some hybrid work.  The starting salary for the position is $85,000 annually plus benefits.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works collaboratively to coordinate, improve, and assess services, programs, and resources and to efficiently carry out the functions of the Department and Teams.
    • Develops, implements, and assesses initiatives and operations within the Department and its Teams
    • Stays abreast of and regularly shares current knowledge relevant to the work of the Department and its Teams
    • Guides Team Coordinators in developing, prioritizing, and maintaining Team service standards, projects, and operations
  • Oversees operations of the Department
    • Guides the assessment process within the Department and L&LS
    • Convenes and leads regular Department meetings and ensures that Teams are meeting regularly

  • Oversees outreach and publicity services, operations, and events for L&LS, including developing success metrics.
  • Coordinates library faculty liaison newsletters, liaison reports, and faculty orientations to L&LS.
  • Engages with relevant Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) committees and collaborations.
  • Participates in designing, implementing, delivering, and assessing a comprehensive information literacy and library instruction program in person and online; works with assigned school directors to achieve information literacy objectives; creates and maintains research guides and other digital learning objects in assigned subject areas.
  • Serves as subject liaison to faculty and students in assigned programs; provides instruction and research support for those programs; selects resources to support those instructional and research needs; manages collection in assigned subjects.
  • Provides reference and research assistance to users at all service locations through a variety of communication modes including in-person, phone, email, and virtual reference; participates in an evening and weekend reference desk coverage rotation.

OTHER DUTIES AND ASSIGNMENTS

  • Participates as a member of the faculty in accordance with the Marymount University Faculty Handbook, including expectations for teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Collaborates on or leads a variety of teams, task forces, and committees within L&LS, across the University, and within consortia.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education: ALA accredited Master’s degree in library science required; second graduate degree preferred for hire and is required for promotion in faculty rank.

Experience: At least five years of relevant library work experience required, with a minimum of two years of progressive supervisory responsibility.

Access Services Specialist, Resource Sharing

Summary

The Access Specialist provides support in the Resource Sharing Unit of Access Services by 

  • searching/acquiring/processing materials through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Consortia Loan Service (CLS);
  • pulling and shelving library material requested through ILL and CLS;
  • managing the activities and work of student employees during regularly scheduled shifts at Service Desks in Lauinger and Blommer libraries. 

Assignments will vary to address cyclical, priority needs of the department. The work schedule is 11:30 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday. Schedule may change according to the needs of the department, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS
  • 1 year related experience
  • Familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong public service orientation
  • Computer literate, including ability to learn new software programs and technologies

Program Associate, Center for Undergraduate Fellowships & Research

Summary

GW Libraries and Academic Innovation, the nexus for cross-disciplinary collaboration across campus, is responsible for online learning programs, academic technology, and faculty teaching initiatives. Encompassing Gelman, Eckles, and VSTC, the GW Libraries support the research and learning goals of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty of the university in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and deeply engaged intellectual community. Reporting to the Director, Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research, the Program Associate works within the Division’s Center for Undergraduate Fellowships & Research team.

Description

GW created the Center for Undergraduate Fellowships & Research (CUFR) to provide GW undergraduates and alumni with information, guidance and support as they learn about and apply for research opportunities and national fellowship competitions. Learning about and applying for undergraduate fellowships and research awards can be a great complement to academic and extracurricular experiences at GW and can be a learning experience in its own right.


The Program Associate, Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research is responsible for the following duties:

 

  • Supporting the CUFR by recruiting and advising undergraduates and recent alumni in applying for national and international fellowships as well as faculty mentored research opportunities; identifying and advising candidates through all stages of the application process for a wide range of national and international fellowships, including Fulbright, Boren, Luce, and Carnegie; and advising faculty and other student mentors in preparing effective letters of recommendation in support of the fellowship applications.
  • Leading personal statement/proposal development workshops and information sessions for student groups on campus.
  • Ensuring timeliness and accuracy in the management of multiple, simultaneous fellowship competitions and recruitment processes; developing and maintaining databases to track CUFR activities, including publicity, advising of applicants and competition results; and collecting and maintaining applicant files and records.
  • Coordinating logistics and managing application submissions for campus-based awards.
  • Developing, designing, and editing outreach materials relating to fellowship and undergraduate research programs; promoting GW undergraduate research awards and programs through advising and outreach events; and collaborating with campus partners such as the Career Center, the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service, and Office for Study Abroad, in publicizing programs and recruiting students.
  • Managing the CUFR website and other social media outlets to collect and disseminate information to students, faculty and academic advisors regarding national and international fellowship and research opportunities.
  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of the annual Research Showcase at GW in partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR).
  • Enhancing professional expertise through attendance at conferences and seminars, service to professional organizations, review of current literature, and collaboration with colleagues.
  • This position may supervise student employees.


The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in international education, higher education administration, student affairs, or related field is preferred
  • Progressively responsible professional experience in student advising, university programming or related fields
  • Experience with academic, career, and/or study abroad advising in a college/university setting
  • Experience teaching writing or editing student scholarship essays and applications
  • Knowledge of national and international scholarship/fellowship competitions and ability to match students to appropriate programs
  • Experience with faculty-mentored research is a plus

China Studies Librarian

Description

The China Studies librarian is responsible for collaboratively developing, planning, and managing the services and collections of the China Documentation Center and Taiwan Resource Center in collaboration with colleagues in Research & User Services, the Global Resources Center, and others. The librarian will:

  • Engage in outreach to faculty, students and researchers focused on China; develop associated programming; and develop, evaluate, and manage strong interdisciplinary collections and specialized services in support of the University’s evolving research mission.
  • Acquire resources in Chinese, English, and other languages relevant to the study of the region.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Content Management to coordinate processing of research materials to ensure discoverability.
  • Provide on-site and remote research services and participate in instruction activities, especially those related to China Studies and/or English for Academic Purposes.
  • In collaboration with colleagues in Research & User Services, the Global Resources Center and others, support the research and learning activities of the GW community.
  • Facilitate connections with external researchers, donors, and international partners.
