Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library (Himmelfarb) serves the students, staff, and faculty of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Milken Institute School of Public Health, and School of Nursing. Himmelfarb’s collections consist of over 6,700 electronic texts, 6,500 journals, and 125+ databases in addition to print collections of approximately 75,000 items. 

The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library seeks a dynamic, collaborative information professional to manage the library’s serials collection of over 6,500 electronic journal titles. The Serials Librarian is responsible for the management of the library’s journal subscriptions, including budgeting, licensing, discovery, usage assessment, and user education. This position reports to the Associate Director, Library Operations, is a collaborative member of the Library Operations team, and supervises the Serials Manager, a full-time staff position.

Description

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manages daily operations in the Serials Department and the overall successful availability of all journals.
  2. Manages the serials portion of the collections budget, and ensures serials subscription costs stay within budgetary limits. Approves and tracks invoice payments throughout the fiscal year. 
  3. Assesses and analyzes the serials collection on an ongoing basis to inform yearly renewal and selection decisions.
  4. Activates and maintains serials records in the Alma library services platform. 
  5. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with vendors to negotiate license agreements and pricing of serials subscriptions, and to establish and ensure consistent access to serials holdings across multiple platforms. Collaborates with the Acquisitions Librarian in vendor negotiations as needed.
  6. Collaborates with collections librarians and staff at Gelman Library and Burns Law Library on shared subscription negotiations, shared collection decisions, and negotiation of transformative license agreements with vendors.
  7. Collaborates with, trains, and supervises the Serials Manager to maintain seamless on-site and off-site access to electronic journals through link checking and access troubleshooting, link resolver and EZproxy management, IP range management, and holdings record management.
  8. Markets journal collection titles to users and educates users about access options and troubleshooting tips.
  9. Creates and maintains documentation of serials-related policies, procedures, and workflows.
  10. Participates in the Library's instructional program as a Librarian Instructor, partnered with a Clinical Instructor with first and second-year medical students.
  11. Collaborates with the Metadata and Scholarly Publishing Librarian to ensure an accurate reflection of serial title changes in the online catalog.
  12. Participates in the Collection Development committee and has selector responsibilities for assigned liaison departments.
  13. Supports authors through education and consultations on journal selection, predatory publishing, open access publishing, and securing funding for article processing charges.
  14. Maintains current knowledge of trends in librarianship, especially electronic resources, their impact, and management issues. Provides leadership within the library on serials resources and their management.
  15. Participates in library-wide committees.
  16. Other duties may be assigned to reflect candidate strengths and interests and/or unit needs, and after discussion with the supervisor.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s in library or information science from an ALA-accredited school (or equivalent) or another Master's degree or higher with relevant experience conferred by the start of employment.
  • 1-2 years experience working in a library setting.
  • Excellent oral (presentations, training workshops) and written (training materials, requested analyses, documentation, reports) communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience with electronic serials or electronic resources management through library automated systems (such as Alma).
  • 2-3 years experience in either a health sciences library or an academic library.
  • Experience analyzing collections, budgets, workflows, and troubleshooting access issues.
  • Experience negotiating publisher/vendor licenses.
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to use spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Office Excel or Google Sheets for analysis and reporting.
  • Experience working with SUSHI and COUNTER usage statistics.
  • Experience with serials workflow from identification of items to patron access for electronic serials.
  • Experience supporting Open Access initiatives.

Subject specialist librarians within the three broad disciplinary teams contribute to the intellectual enterprise through selection expertise for building the Libraries’ research collections – in all forms and formats – and ensuring these collections meet the ever-developing needs of the university’s academic and research programs.

Through the Teaching and Learning Team, LRE works collaboratively with faculty and program administrators from such areas as the Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR), the Honors Program, the Communications Lab, the Mason/NOVA Advance Partnership; English 101 and 302 course administration, etc., to provide intensive, and broad-based instruction and related services to classes and groups of students.

About the Position:

The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Learning, Research, and Engagement (LRE) is responsible for the leadership, planning, and administrative oversight of most of the University Libraries’ outwardly focused programs, services, and initiatives that directly impact the George Mason community of students at all levels, faculty, and researchers. The AUL for LRE leads the division in the development and articulation of an innovative and compelling vision for advancing teaching, learning, and research, as well as the importance of the libraries (as well as research commons) as place for the GMU community. While also engaging directly with faculty, academic administrators, and students, the AUL works with Libraries’ faculty and staff to innovate, design, pilot, implement, promote, and assess user-focused services that respond to a rapidly changing scholarly environment, in support of the Libraries’ mission and vision. This position works collaboratively as part of Dean’s Executive Team (the senior leadership team) to help develop and implement the Libraries’ strategic priorities.

Responsibilities:
 

  • Consults with, apprises, and advises the Dean of Libraries & University Librarian of issues within the scope and content of the LRE division’s mission and associated resources, services and programs;
  • Provides leadership, administrative oversight, budgetary responsibility, and coordination for the Libraries’ system-wide departments involved with teaching, learning, research services, user engagement, and advising on the Libraries’ research collections through subject expertise;
  • Fosters an environment that encourages exploration, innovation, and implementation of new approaches to teaching, learning, and scholarship in a rapidly changing digital learning and work environment;
  • Works to support existing partnerships within the university (such as those with OSCAR, the Communications Lab, the Honors Program, the Early Identification Program, the English Composition Program, the Writing Center and the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning), as well establish new partnerships, both internal and external to George Mason University;
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Administration, leads and collaborates on initiatives to maximize creative and attractive teaching, learning, and research spaces, including possibilities of learning commons environments;
  • Serves as a member of Dean’s Executive Team to review and establish University Libraries’ policies, strategically plan system-wide programs and services, evaluate resources and services, and contribute to the development of grant proposals for projects and activities requiring external funding;
  • Manages personnel and training for all departments and units within the LRE division of the libraries and provides leadership for the professional development and training of the directors, department heads, and library faculty and staff within the division;
  • Oversees preparation of budget requests for Wages expenditures and other than personnel services expenditures for the LRE division;
  • Works closely with the heads of the Mercer and Mason Square Libraries to assure excellent collections and services;
  • Ensures timely and ongoing assessment of all LRE programs and initiatives, including those concerned with learning and instruction, user engagement (encompassing both student and faculty dimensions), research services and programs, and prepares reports, studies, and analyses as needed;
  • Works with regional, state, and national consortia/networks and other professional agencies, particularly with the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), with the Washington Research Libraries Consortium (WRLC), and Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), related to activities falling within the scope of the position’s role and responsibilities; and
  • Performs other administrative, management, and leadership functions within University Libraries and to support the university community as needed/requested, including leadership of and service on University Libraries as well as university-wide committees.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:
  • ALA-accredited graduate degree, or certified foreign equivalent;
  • Substantial experience and record of accomplishments in at least two of the following functional areas: academic programs liaison and faculty outreach; instructional services; reference and research services provision; and user/campus engagement and programmatic partnerships;
  • Substantial budgetary experience, particularly related to program development, discretionary funds, or Wages budgets;
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques and trends in academic libraries;
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and collaborate in a rapidly changing organizational and institutional environment;
  • Experience managing supervisory/managerial personnel, library faculty, and other staff, including excellent and proven skills in mentoring and leading employees, and as well with employee relations matters;
  • Ability to conceptualize, and capacity to innovate and contribute toward, transformative organizational change, to advance development of library faculty and staff, and foster access, diversity and inclusion for both members of the academic community served and library employees;
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic outreach and to student/faculty engagement; and

  • Advanced academic (i.e., discipline) degree;
  • Preferred candidates will demonstrate significant, progressively responsible management/administrative-level experience (8+ years) further preference if within an academic or research library setting;
  • Expertise in strategizing, planning, visioning, and change management;
  • Experience in the management of multiple functional areas/departments;
  • Classroom teaching experience and conversant with higher education pedagogies;
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications trends (including open access models, intellectual property domain, and open educational resources);
  • Experience with or knowledge of grants writing, and familiarity with development/advancement work; and
  • Experience with regional and national academic library consortia.

Equipment Coordinator and Access Services Specialist

The Equipment Coordinator and Access Services Specialist is responsible for efficiently managing and maintaining a media equipment collection and ensuring that these state-of-the-art resources are reliably available to the Georgetown community. Course Reserves Coordinator

Under the general supervision of the Course Reserves Manager, this position assists with managing the day-to-day operations of Course Reserves and the library’s Makerspace. Receives and processes requested materials for both print and electronic reserves. Collaborates with the Course Reserves Manager to ensures that requested materials comply with Copyright Law of the United States and obtains permission for their use. Essential Functions

Provide customer service at the first-floor service point.  Circulate materials to the borrowing community. Assist the Course Reserves Manager in supervising the operations related to course reserves for print, electronic, and media materials for American University faculty coursework.  In coordination with the Media Services department, assist in receiving and processing materials that are requested by university faculty and make them available in a timely manner. Provide a high level of guidance to university faculty regarding reserves, Canvas (LMS), and both federal and library copyright guidelines. Aid in informing faculty of the status of the requests as needed. May compile and analyze Reserve statistics on a monthly basis or as needed. Assist the Course Reserve Manager in maintaining the library’s reserves collection and organization of reserves materials, both physical, electronic and digital. Processing responsibilities include searching for materials within the library, ordering items that the library does not own through Acquisitions and e-Resources, requesting items from other WRLC libraries through the library catalog and Interlibrary Loan.  Scan and prepare documents for electronic use and upload them to the library’s database platform. In collaboration with the Circulation Specialists, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Student Assistants (approximately 30 per semester). Entrusted with project management responsibilities and delegation of work (routine and special) to be completed by the student staff.  Verify the accuracy and productivity of student assistants. Participate in discussions about student assistant performance and planning. Under general oversight of the Course Reserves Manager and in conjunction with Media Services staff, manage the daily operations of the Makerspace. Perform unit responsibilities, including engaging in unit meetings, assisting with maintaining unit document, participating with shaping unit policies and procedures. Serve as essential services staff member in the event of a University closing due to inclement weather or emergency.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As the Instruction Team Coordinator, provides leadership and planning for the Team functions.  The Team Coordinator, in collaboration with the A&E Department Head, facilitates, coordinates, and evaluates Team services, projects, programs, and procedures.  The Instruction Team Coordinator is also responsible for:
    • Serving as a resource person in the areas of learning and teaching, pedagogical techniques, and technology as it relates to library instruction and information literacy.
    • Supporting the continuous improvement of instructional programs and practices within L&LS.
    • Training librarians in Marymount University instruction practices.
  • In partnership and consultation with other faculty librarians, coordinates the design, maintenance, and assessment of DLOs including, but not limited to, videos, tutorials, and Springshare LibGuides.
  • Serves as a resource for librarians in the development of effective online pedagogy, in compliance with established accessibility guidelines and higher education standards. 
  • Ensures all DLOs are developed using pedagogically sound techniques that develop students’ knowledge and expertise of library resources and that enhance students’ research experiences.
  • Continuously explores new technologies, stays abreast of trends and professional development opportunities to support online learning.
  • Manages library services content management platforms, such as Springshare.
  • Participates in designing, implementing, delivering, and assessing a comprehensive information literacy and library instruction program in person and online; works with assigned school directors to achieve information literacy objectives; creates and maintains research guides and other DLOs in assigned subject areas.
  • Serves as subject liaison to faculty and students in assigned programs; provides instruction and research support for those programs; selects resources to support those instructional and research needs; manages collection in assigned subjects. 
  • Provides reference and research assistance to users at all service locations through a variety of communication modes including in-person, phone, email, and virtual reference; participates in an evening and weekend reference desk coverage rotation.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND ASSIGNMENTS

  • Participates as a member of the faculty in accordance with the Marymount University Faculty Handbook, including expectations for teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Collaborates on or leads a variety of teams, task forces, and committees within L&LS, across the University, and within consortia.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education: ALA accredited Master’s degree in library science required; second graduate degree preferred for hire and is required for promotion in faculty rank.

Experience: At least three years of relevant library work experience required. 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  Must be able to work independently with limited supervision and must be able to work collaboratively on teams.  Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and time management skills.  Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and database searching required.  The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Supervision: May supervise faculty librarians, part-time librarians, staff, and/or Graduate Assistants.

Special Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of online pedagogies. Familiarity with creating DLOs using tools such as SpringShare, Camtasia, Captivate, etc.  
  • Demonstrated teaching skills and an understanding of trends in information literacy instruction and instructional technologies. Excellent customer service skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups.  Commitment to collaboration in a dynamic work environment.
