Summary

The Jacob Burns Law Library at the George Washington University Law School is accepting applications for the position of assistant director for administrative services to begin as early as August 1, 2025. The librarian in this position oversees activities of the Library Administrative Office, including coordinating librarian recruitment and hiring, assisting with library personnel matters, and reconciling and maintaining library budget reports. The librarian in this position also coordinates collection development.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in library or information science (e.g., MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution
  • JD, LLB, or LLM from an ABA-accredited institution, and
  • A minimum of five years of post-graduate degree experience in a law library with a history of increasing responsibility that includes knowledge of legal information sources, research methodologies, and related technologies; strong managerial, problem-solving, project management, and communication and writing skills

  • Leadership skills including ability to mentor and develop team members and to work effectively in a diverse workforce

Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation’s capital. The Law School is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Law Library supports the curricular and teaching requirements of the Law School, the research and publication needs of the law faculty, and the study and research needs of the law students; and provides to the scholarly community at large access to a research collection of material about the law and its history. Please note that initially the librarian in this position will be required to work at the university's Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, DC; the ability to work a hybrid schedule including a combination of on-campus and remote work in the future will be assessed and determined by the supervisor in accordance with law school and university policies.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversees, coordinates, and/or performs activities of the Library Administrative Office, including supervising the executive coordinator
  • With the other assistant directors, and under the supervision of the director, manages ongoing daily activities of the library
  • Coordinates with the director and other assistant directors in short- and long-range planning for the library, and takes a leading role in creating and implementing library guidelines and procedures
  • Acts in the stead of the director in his absence, either alone or in cooperation with the other assistant directors
  • Reconciles university budget performance reports, including approving payment requests and maintaining monthly record keeping for the gift fund, the endowment fund, the photocopy fund, and the current operating funds
  • Coordinates with the Law School’s HR manager, as needed, in matters relating to library personnel and employee relations
  • Oversees matters relating to the library facility, including day-to-day maintenance issues and assistance to the director in special projects related to library construction and renovation
  • Oversees librarian recruitment activities; coordinates with the Law School’s HR manager on staff recruitment activities, as needed
  • Coordinates and assists with library reorganization plans and proposals
  • Oversees the collection development process, which includes selecting material for the general collection, working closely with subject specialists on selections in their areas of expertise, working closely with colleagues in Resource Management Services on matters relating to acquisitions, processing, and payment of material for the library collection, working closely with colleagues involved in electronic resource management; and overseeing updates to the library’s collection development policy.
  • May perform regular reference duties, including participation in the faculty liaison program
  • Participates in other university, law school, library activities and/or serves on committees related to areas of responsibility
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the director

Salary and benefits: Salary and appointment at the rank of Librarian I/II/III/IV are dependent upon qualifications. Salary ranges for these ranks are as follows: Librarian I = $80,000 - $90,000; Librarian II = $85,000 - $120,000; Librarian III = $100,000 - $150,000; Librarian IV = $120,000 - $200,000. Salary is negotiable, contingent upon rank, skills, and qualifications and is competitive for DC-area academic libraries. This position is eligible for full-time employee health benefits. Head of Digital Initiatives

Summary

This position is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, and advancement of
the Law Library’s digital collections. Reporting to the Associate Director for Resource Management and
Technology at the Georgetown University Law Library, the Head of Digital Initiatives leads a cohesive
digitization program and works to implement an effective and achievable strategy to ensure long-term
protection and access to Georgetown University Law Library’s digital assets.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent)

  • Six to ten years of library experience (including supervisory experience)

  • Experience with standard digitization workflows, including the use of large-scale scanning equipment, image editing software, and inventory control procedures

  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to design and implement long-term digitization projects

  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems, implement new equipment and software, and apply technical standards for digitization

  • Experience using digital imaging and post-processing software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge

  • Experience with institutional repository systems, including storing, organizing, securing, and sharing digital assets

  • Knowledge of one or more metadata standards appropriate for describing digital materials, such as Dublin Core, MARC, MODS, or METS.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with XML/XSLT

  • Experience in working with data from an Integrated Library System

  • Experience in an academic library in a university setting

The Georgetown Law Library is looking for qualified candidates to apply for the Head of Digital
Initiatives.
This position is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, and advancement of
the Law Library’s digital collections. Reporting to the Associate Director for Resource Management and
Technology at the Georgetown University Law Library, the Head of Digital Initiatives leads a cohesive
digitization program and works to implement an effective and achievable strategy to ensure long-term
protection and access to Georgetown University Law Library’s digital assets.
The Digital Initiatives department is responsible for production digitization of Law Library materials and
making them available through a number of digital repositories. The department includes two full-time
staff and a team of 4-6 student assistants. Responsible for the operations of the department, this
position delegates tasks, provides general oversight and direction for the daily work of the department,
and monitors the physical space to ensure safety and an appropriate work environment. The incumbent
sets the goals and priorities for the department, develops and maintains the policies and procedures to
meet those goals, and provides opportunities for training and development of the staff in the
department. This position represents the department’s work and interests in communications with
peers, collaborators, and vendors both internal and external to Georgetown, and participates in
strategic planning and decision-making with respect to major purchases and new initiatives.
